Cases:
Speech & Debate class, 2012-2013
Greetings Methow Valley Students and Families!
By Dr. Mark Wenzel, Superintendent
Speech and Debate team at Liberty Bell is entering its second year in 2012-2013. Last year, a dedicated group of about 10 students competed, winning numerous trophies. Five students qualified for state tournaments in Spokane and Tacoma. Overall, it was a great success.
This year, I will teach a Speech & Debate class at Liberty Bell, as well as coach the team. We’re looking to involve as many students as possible, so please contact me if you are interested.
Speech and Debate is considered one of the top high school activities to support future success in post-secondary education. College admissions officers love it because it fosters critical reading, writing and thinking skills. There are also opportunities for university scholarships for Speech and Debate team members.
In addition, the club offers a special camaraderie among students. This is an opportunity to build skill, make friends, have fun, eat pizza and tell stories on long bus rides. Who could ask for anything more?
At Liberty Bell, our team will be comprised of students in grades 9-12. Eighth graders may participate upon being approved by the coach.
Our tournament schedule will be:
November

First place oratory (Nick); first place Humorous Interp (Jacqueline); third place Humorous Interp (Tom); first place Editorial Commentary (Tom); finalist, Editorial Commentary (Julia, Hannah, Jacqueline, Emily)

For information on debate, please click on the link below. There are three types of debate in Washington high schools. In 2012-2013, Liberty Bell will compete in public forum debate.
There are eight speech categories in two blocks. Students can compete in multiple events.
Block 1
Block 2
Practices will be before and after school, with a lot of coaching taking place before tournaments. The bar is high. We will work hard and show other schools very high-caliber performances. I’m excited.
