The acronym DIBELS stands for “Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills.” It is a reading test given individually to elementary students three times a year. It was developed at the Universities of Minnesota and Oregon to be an accurate (80 percent reliability) measure of whether students have mastered the skills that will put them on the path to being competent readers.
Methow Valley Elementary teachers use DIBELS to help determine specific support and enrichment for readers from kindergarten through sixth grade. In October 2010, instructional coach Anne Andersen wrote about DIBELS (pdf) in Methow Valley Pride.
