Project Safe and Secure – A Community-Based Approach to School Safety!

Project Safe & Secure - Safe Schools Alert ProgramWorking in partnership with Chief of Police, Paul Budrow, members of the Methow Valley School District’s Emergency Response Core Planning team participated in a comprehensive four-day “Emergency Operations Planning” training in Wenatchee. The training, sponsored by the North Central ESD, was facilitated by the Emergency Management Institute.

During the training, core planning teams from each of the five participating school districts developed the knowledge and skills needed to build and exercise a responsive, community-based approach for maintaining safe schools. The knowledge and skills learned by our team will allow us to engage the entire community in the development of comprehensive plan built on a framework of: Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response and Recovery.

As with every planning process, there are some hazards unique to our schools that are somewhat complex and will require further analysis and collaboration between agencies to ensure everyone understands their role and responsibilities. However, there are other areas that where we can take immediate action to ensure our schools continue to remain a safe place for all.

That being said, we would like to share two important ways you can assist us with this process right away:

1. Visitor Check-in: Please check in at our school offices and receive a visitor’s sticker each time you come in to school. When you come into school as a volunteer, to enjoy an experience or even to pick up your child, you make our buildings safer when you do this. It is important that we can account for who is in our building and classrooms at all times.

2. Safe Alert: In the coming days, our school district will be launching SafeSchools Alert, a tip reporting service that allows students, staff, and parents to anonymously submit safety concerns to our building administrators. You or your child will now be able to report tips on bullying, harassment, drugs, vandalism or any other safety issue you’re concerned about through SafeSchools Alert.

Every tip SafeSchools Alert receives about our district will be immediately logged into this reporting system. Our administration will be notified so that they can investigate and take appropriate action.

This is not a tool intended to replace the important face-to-face conversations you have with your child’s teacher. Contacting your child’s teacher or school administrator will continue to be an effective way to ask questions or voice your concerns related to your child’s academic and social-emotional development.

As with any situation, our first priority is everyone’s safety. We look forward to partnering with our first responder agencies and you at all points along the way!
