Developing Students Who Graduate Prepared for the Widest Range of Post-Secondary College, Career, and Life Opportunities Possible

Hello, Students and Families:

November has already been a busy month!

We’re back from another successful tour of some of our state’s post-secondary options: Spokane Community College, Whitworth University, and Eastern Washington University.

It was fascinating to visit three diverse educational institutions in one day, and we finished our first day of the tour with a productive (and timely) discussion about finding the right post-secondary fit, led by Kolton Anderson from EWU’s admissions office. The second day led us to the Spokane Convention Center for the NACAC National College Fair – our students took advantage of the opportunity to talk with admissions representatives from around the country, and many came home with a better sense of where they’d like to go after high school. As one Liberty Bell senior put it, “College is looking better and better!”

Trevor Surface MetalworkSince my last newsletter, Trent Whatley and 20 students and I attended Spokane Construction Career Day (sponsored by the Construction Center of Excellence), and about a week later Kelleigh McMillan, Kathy Pasley, Andrea Bebout and I took a busload of students to the Okanogan County Career Expo. Both trips gave students the chance to explore a range of careers and educational opportunities (though only Construction Day attendees got to drive heavy machinery!).

Back at home we’ve hosted an essay writing work party, Finish the FAFSA Night, and a couple visits from admissions representatives. On the horizon is the annual LBHS Alumni Panel, which will take place during Advisory and lunch on Wednesday, December 18 (11:15am-12:30pm).

Parents of alumni – please let me know if your student will be returning for the holidays and would be willing to share their post-high school experiences!

I’d like to highlight one fast-approaching event: On November 22 students have the opportunity to learn more about careers in healthcare and health sciences during a field trip to the Allied Health Center of Excellence at Yakima Valley College – sign up today.
