Talking to Children About COVID-19

Dear Methow Valley Parents,

Growing up as a young child during the Cold War era, I recall waking up during the middle of the night, unable to return to sleep, gripped by the anxiety and fears associated with the threat of a world war… Worried about being bombed, worried about losing my family, I would crawl into my parents’ bed seeking assurance that we were safe.

As I tucked my children into bed tonight, I found myself thinking and wondering about the anxiety and fears they may be feeling about COVID-19 and like my parents, my role in helping to ease some of their anxiety and fears. With this in mind, I thought I’d pass along a resource from the National Association of School Psychologists that you might find helpful.

Thank you Methow Valley Parents for your calm, steady, and reassuring approach to supporting your child during this difficult period of time. We’re in this together!

Sincerely,

Tom Venable
Superintendent, Methow Valley School District
