The MVSD is pleased to announce the selection of Laurel Carlton to serve as MVE’s new Family and Community Engagement Coordinator. Replacing Katharine Bill, Laurel will be leading the district’s efforts to provide elementary-age students and families access to high quality after-school childcare and enrichment opportunities.
As a LBHS graduate, Laurel is coming full circle, giving back in service to the community where it all started for her… The Methow Valley. Following her graduation from LBHS and the University of Idaho, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology and dance performance, Laurel’s journey has included a broad and diverse range of educational leadership and teaching positions. Her work related experience includes serving as an educator in the Early Head Start program, Program Coordinator for Woodland Park Zoo, a teacher for Starbucks corporate childcare program, and most recently as the Program Director for Little Star’s Infant and Toddler program located in Twisp. As a LBHS graduate, she spent her younger years teaching for Methow Valley Riding Unlimited and LFW Dance Studios.
More recently, Laurel has focused on connecting families to quality childcare and enriching opportunities for all youth. When asked what drives her passion for this work, Laurel stated, “Focusing on the importance of equity and recognizing the daily struggles and obstacles that arise for families.” She believes wholeheartedly that high quality childcare and education are essential for family health and stability, a brighter future for our youth, and a stable economy.
When asked about Laurel, MVE Principal, Paul Gutzler stated, “Katharine has left some pretty big shoes to fill. If there’s anyone that can do it, I believe it’s Laurel. Her combination of education, work-related experience, connections within the community, and passion for this work make her a perfect fit.”
Laurel and her husband Eric live in Twisp with their two children Kate (8) and James (5). When she isn’t working, Laurel enjoys hiking, swimming in alpine lakes and having dance parties in her living room with her kids.
Please join us as we welcome Laurel Carlton, MVE Family and Community Engagement Coordinator!
