  • Welcome Back to School!
    Aug 26, 2024

    Welcome Back to School!

Dear Methow Valley Students, Parents, and Community Members,

I hope this message finds you enjoying the last day of summer and soaking up the sunshine. As we prepare for a new school year, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the journey ahead. On Tuesday, August 27th, we will open our doors to students in grades 1-12, ready to embrace their hopes and dreams. We will do the same on Tuesday, September 3rd as we welcome our incoming Kindergarteners. I can hardly wait to welcome everyone back to what promises to be an incredible year!

Our mission remains clear: to support each student “one student at a time,” celebrating their achievements and milestones along the way. In addition to their many successes, we anticipate both expected and unexpected challenges. We view these as valuable opportunities for growth and learning. We view these as valuable opportunities for growth and learning. Together, we will guide our students to become more knowledgeable, skillful, and embody the values of our community-grace, humility, resilience, curiosity, compassion, and determination-strengthening our community in the process.

Over the spring and summer, our dedicated team of principals, school staff, and educational partners have been working diligently to prepare for your return. We've focused on making improvements to our facilities, preserving our diverse educational programs and enriching extracurricular activities, maintaining small class sizes, updating instructional resources, expanding mental health services, and refining our instructional technology practices. These efforts, guided by research and feedback from students, staff, and parents, aim to foster higher levels of student engagement in their learning and meaningful connections to one another.

The key to our success continues to be the strong partnership between students, staff, parents, educational partners, and the community. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you in advance for your ongoing commitment to nurturing curious, competent, compassionate, action-oriented students who graduate prepared to pursue the widest range of career, education, and life opportunities possible. I can’t imagine a better place to raise our youth!

We’re excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to see everyone back at school!

    Warm regards,

    Tom Venable

MVSD AfterCare, Clubs, Clubs, and More Clubs...

AfterCare Program- In an effort to address what was previously described as a "community-wide childcare crisis" plaguing our community, the MVSD launched the After School Childcare program in the fall of 2016. Designed to provide elementary-age children with access to high quality, affordable after-school childcare, at no cost to families, we are pleased to be able to continue this vital program, thanks in part to the community's successful passage of our local levies.

Our AfterCare program is available for MVE students Monday through Friday from 3:10-5pm for grades K-5. Aftercare is a free childcare program offered for families who need care after the school day. Snacks and activities are provided, alongside bus transportation to the Winthrop Barn and the Twisp Community Center at 5pm.

AfterCare begins on Tuesday, August 27th. Registration is required, and space is limited. More information can be found on our school website at: https://methow.org/en-US/mve-clubs-activities-6251204f or you can register for AfterCare at: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSeRNhpNQ49.../viewform...

Cub Clubs: At the same time, the MVSD partnered with the Public School Funding Alliance (PSFA) to significantly expand student access to enriching after-school activities, at no cost to families.

Last year, the MVSD hosted over 120 clubs! Cub Clubs are led by community members and parents who want to offer an enriching activity for students after school. Art, Jiu Jitsu, Running, Chess, Trashion Fashion, and Yoga are just a few examples of some of the activities that you might see offered at various points throughout the school year.

Generally speaking, clubs run in 6-7 week sessions, and have separate registration periods. Clubs run Mon-Thur from 3-5pm and Fridays from 1:30-3pm. We strive to give each student an opportunity to participate in after school clubs.

Fall Clubs will begin Monday, September 9th. Registration for fall clubs will begin Friday, August 30th. Look for an email with registration info, or check our website at: https://methow.org/en-US/mve-clubs-activities-6251204f

"Life takes you unexpected places. Love brings you home."

The Methow Valley School District is delighted to share some heartwarming news: Carrie Fink has returned home. This fall, Carrie will rejoin our community as LBHS’s middle school math teacher, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Carrie’s journey took her far from the Methow Valley last year, as she embarked on a remarkable adventure teaching at The American School of the Hague (ASH) in the Netherlands. After nearly 30 years of dedicated service with the MVSD, her decision to explore international teaching was a testament to her passion for education and global experiences.

Before she left, Carrie expressed her gratitude for the chance to teach abroad but assured us with a warm smile, “I will be back to the Methow Valley I know and love!”

As Carrie returns to our community, we eagerly anticipate the stories and insights she will bring from her time overseas. Stay tuned for more details about her international journey in the upcoming fall edition of the MV Pride.

Please join us in giving Carrie Fink a heartfelt welcome back home!

MVSD's Commitment to Free and Appropriate Public Education

Dear Methow Valley Students, Parents, and Community Members,

As the new school year approaches, we’re often reminded of the financial pressures that can come with it, including various fees for supplies, activities, and other expenses. Many families face these challenges, with some paying substantial amounts just to cover the cost of education.

Over a decade ago, a friend shared a screenshot with me showing the staggering $1,250 in fees she had to pay for her four children for just one semester. Sadly, this situation remains common in many communities due to inadequate funding for basic education.

Despite these challenges, the Methow Valley School District (MVSD) remains dedicated to its mission of "Equity and Excellence for All." Our budget is designed to ensure that every student has access to a free and appropriate public education.

How do we achieve this? As former MVSD Board Director Mary Anne Quigley wisely said, “We can’t do this alone. We can do it together!” Our ability to offer high-quality education and resources is largely thanks to the support from our local levies and our wonderful educational partners.

For those who enjoy the tradition of back-to-school shopping, we invite you to consider a new tradition: supporting our educational partners. Your donations can make a significant difference. Here are some of the many organizations that support our students:

    • Public School Funding Alliance (PSFA)
    • Methow Arts
    • Little Star School
    • Methow Valley Riding Unlimited
    • Classroom in Bloom
    • TwispWorks
    • Liberty Bell Booster Club
    • Winthrop Kiwanis Club
    • Methow Recycles
    • Pipestone School of Music
    • Methow Conservancy
    • North Central Regional Libraries
    • Winthrop Rink
    • Methow Trails
    • Methow Housing Trust
    • Room One

We look forward to a great school year ahead and thank you for your continued support!

    Warm regards,

    Tom Venable
    Superintendent, Methow Valley School District
